We tracked down a major source of the recent Hardcore lag and have completed a performance overhaul.
- ๐ Found a major slowdown: Hardcore was loading and fully saving player statistics about once every second, even when a player was standing completely still.
- โก Reduced unnecessary saves: Player stats are still tracked every second, but routine stat changes are now grouped together and saved about once every 10 seconds.
- ๐ This reduces routine full database saves from roughly 60 per minute to 6 per minute.
- โ ๏ธ Hardcore deaths are still immediate. Deaths, fallen status, player life state, Rebirth information, and other critical Hardcore data are not delayed.
- ๐ Coordinates were not the main problem. When Coordinates are turned off, Hardcore does not calculate or display them.
- ๐งน The Hardcore Interface was also cleaned up so disabled features perform much less background work.
- ๐ง Several additional unnecessary calculations and duplicate processing steps were removed from the stat system.
- ๐ Chunk loading is still expected to use more CPU while exploring new terrain, so that portion will be measured separately.
- โ๏ธ We also identified another possible slowdown during rapid gameplay events such as mining, placing blocks, eating, and opening containers. That will be investigated if needed after the current update is measured.
- ๐งช Next step: Run the same live performance tests again with a player standing still, moving normally, and exploring new chunks.
Previous Performance Baseline
- Standing still: 63% BDS CPU
- Normal movement: 83% BDS CPU
- Loading new chunks: 105% BDS CPU
The new performance update is being measured against those exact numbers so we can see what actually improved instead of declaring victory because the server looked at us nicely. ๐งฑ๐
Status: Performance improvements implemented. Live gameplay performance validation is next.
